24% of Hampton County adults are functionally illiterate.
Literacy is an individual's ability to read, write, and speak English, solve problems at levels of proficiency necessary to function on the job and in society, and achieve one's personal goals. (The National Literacy Act)
Why Literacy? Why not focus on world health? Or gender equality? Or poverty relief? The answer is simple. To solve all of these socioeconomic problems and more, we must start by building a more literate adult population. When these individuals learn how to read, write, do basic math, and use computers, the more likely they are to lift themselves out of poverty, contribute to improved health care costs, and find and keep sustainable employment.
Mission Statement: Hampton County Literacy provides a comprehensive and fully coordinated adult basic education system that will assist adults in fulfilling their human potential to participate in society and to ensure that all adults with limited literacy skills have the opportunity to pursue an education and job opportunities to break the cycle of poverty.
